Salwar - Kameez is a traditional (yet worn even by modern Indian women) Indian garment worn originally by North Indian women. The salwar is actually pants made in such a way that it is loose and comfortable all the way through. It is tied at the waist with draw strings. It is worn very similar to draw string pants, the only difference being they are stitched with heavy padding and embroidery around the feet. A 'kameez' or long loose shirt which comes up to the knees is worn on top. This salwar - kameez set can be worn either with or without a 'dupatta' which is a long thin shawl draped over the shoulders.
