Knowledgebase - Lehenga & Ghaghra Cholis

Lehenga Cholis
Lehenga is a traditional (yet worn even by modern Indian women) Indian garment worn originally by Indian women from the state of Rajasthan (desert state in the northwest of India). The lehenga is actually a long skirt made in such a way that it is flat (without pleats) but loose and comfortable all the way up to the knee. Below the knee it is pleated and flowing. It is tied at the waist with draw strings. A 'choli' or short blouse which comes up to the top of the skirt is worn on top. This lehenga - choli set can be worn either with or without a 'dupatta' which is a long thin shawl draped over the shoulders. Some of them come with heavy embroidery and rich designs which are usually worn on special occasions.

Lehenga - choli is worn by women of all ages in Rajasthan. Young women in other

parts of the country and Indian women living elsewhere wear lehenga for parties and special occasions. It is easy to wear yet very pretty and graceful. Young women wear their choli in different styles, some baring their mid-riffs and some more modest. Some women drape the 'dupatta' or the shawl around their shoulders and some drape it over their head, especially while praying or talking to elderly people in the family as a sign of respect

Lehenga - choli sets are stitched in different types of fabric: Silk, raw silk, cotton prints, georgettes and so on and so forth. Click here find lehengas for any price range from the high end.
